Google ignores meta tags - or not ? The real story !

Every once in a while you will see articles pop-up on the internet stating that Google ignores meta tags. Where do people come up with this information? Why is it that many people are suddenly experts, without reading or listening what is being told? By publishing this information on forums other people may interpret it wrong and suddenly the wrong information has become a fact.

What happened? It all started when Matt Cutts, a Google programmer, explained in an video message that was posted on YouTube that Google ignores the meta tags Keyword due to misuse of keywords on websites. Just watch the video and after listening to it yourself, read what people have to say about it and change completely what Matt actually told.

The only thing he says is : "Google does not use the keywords meta tag in web ranking". That's it! All the other information is made up by so called experts.

Google does not use the keywords meta tag in web ranking

So Google doesn't use the  meta-tag keywords for ranking.  That is what he says, nothing more and nothing less.

Q: Does this mean that Google ignores all meta tags?
A: No, Google does support several other meta tags.

It's just not correct when so called experts write that Google ignores meta tags. That's because many people use information written by others in forums and think that it is genuine information. So by writing that use of meta tags keyword is not required people presume that all meta tags are being ignored, that meta tags are dead.

The meta tags, an easy way to advice the search engines how to read and index your website, are no longer used. An End to Metatags, Meta Tags no longer work & Death Of A Meta Tag is what the self-proclaimed experts wrote in 2002.

They are wrong ! People keep re-writing the 2002 story over and over again. Why does these experts want to make you believe the metatags are of no use ?

The so called expert did the following test: He added the bogus word qiskodslajdmnkd to his keywords and a few days later searched for all of these words on the four major search engines of Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and Ask and found no pages that matched. If these search engines made use of the meta keywords tag the page had to start coming up. He searched for qiskodslajdmnkd and his home page didn’t come up. Conclusion: The meta keyword tag was not supported.

This test was way too simplistic to prove anything!

This test for the fake word qiskodslajdmnkd only proves that two engines don’t use it for SERP display if the keywords in a meta tag don’t appear on a page. Anything beyond that is conjecture as to cause-and-effect. Please search for these words in Google or Bing. Do you believe the copy-paste-13 year old Guru's or your own eyes?

And what does Google have to say about it?

Q: Does Google ever use the "keywords" meta tag in its web search ranking?
A: In a word, no. Google does sell a Google Search Appliance, and that product has the ability to match meta tags, which could include the keywords meta tag. But that's an enterprise search appliance that is completely separate from our main web search. Our web search (the well-known search at that hundreds of millions of people use each day) disregards keyword metatags completely. They simply don't have any effect in our search ranking at present.

Q: Why doesn't Google use the keywords meta tag?
A: About a decade ago, search engines judged pages only on the content of web pages, not any so-called "off-page" factors such as the links pointing to a web page. In those days, keyword meta tags quickly became an area where someone could stuff often-irrelevant keywords without typical visitors ever seeing those keywords. Because the keywords meta tag was so often abused, many years ago Google began disregarding the keywords meta tag.

Q: Does this mean that Google ignores all meta tags?
A: No, Google does support several other meta tags. This meta tags page documents more info on several meta tags that we do use. For example, we do sometimes use the "description" meta tag as the text for our search results snippets, as this screen shot shows:

Q: Does this mean that Google will always ignore the keywords meta tag?
A: It's possible that Google could use this information in the future, but it's unlikely. Google has ignored the keywords meta tag for years and currently we see no need to change that policy.

As you can see, a total different story!

So why is the influence of the meta tag keywords high?

Especially because by using them wrong it will affect your ranking in a negative matter. Misuse will lead to negative leverage. That means that by using the meta tags keyword it will only effect your website in a very small or hardly any way but by using it wrong it could have a negative effect.
